It’s National Umbrella Day

10 Feb

National Umbrella Day, Umbrellas

Today we celebrate the invention of the umbrella. An umbrella or parasol is a hand-held portable canopy designed to protect against rain or sunlight. Depending on the usage, some parasols are not waterproof. The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow. In some instances, the umbrella is depicted as a flaellum, a fan of palm-leaves or colored feathers fixed on a long handle.

Pinterest Board, Umbrellas, ParasolsUmbrellas are also called bumbershoots, gamps (British), brolly (UK), rainshade and parapluie (French). Parasols are also known as sunshades. Umbrellas or parasols can be the perfect wardrobe accessory and a fashion statement for both women and men.

I am adding more unique and interesting umbrellas and parasols to my Pinterest board “Parasol Follies.” Click on the image to visit my board. If you have a link to your Pinterest Umbrella/Parasol board, please share your link in the comment section below. Happy National Umbrella Day!
