Imagine walking on the beach when you’re a little tipsy and seeing a Strandbeest walking on the beach too. Do you run? Would you faint? Do you sober up quickly and give up drinking alcohol forever?
When you first see it, you ask what in the heck is that? You are fascinated by this extraterrestrial looking sculpture and while you may stay your distance from it at first, you may try taking a selfie near it later.
So where did these Strandbeests come from? These exhibitions are the dream machine sculptures from the creative genius of Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist who began building large mechanisms out of PVC that appear to walk on their own.
Strandbeest Concerto
Mobile beach animals walking by wind-fed fins
like a regimented army of skeletal crustaceans
complex sculptures intricate, liberated and whimsical
a harmonic jostling dragon like an energetic millipede
with a kinetic infusion of artistic engineering
3-dimensional aliens sailing along the sands of time
the multi-legged creature animated and mechanical
a self-propelled orchestra of interlocking highs and lows.

It’s unbelievable graceful and beautiful, wish I could see it in action there!
