My Fellow Writers, What in the GPT is Going On?

Should we panic yet? Oh, my dear writers, while I am all in for technological advancements to a degree, are we inviting technology to grab our last bit of human creativity by replacing us in pivotal areas of communication? Exploring ideas, collaborating with other creative minds, and using our human senses, make us wonder if the latest language models will affect our intelligence vs. that of the artificial. Don’t think the idea of replacing writers and their livelihoods is off-limits or farfetched when it comes down to the invasion of the so-called human-like intelligence known as GPT.

For you writers making a living from your writing can you imagine being replaced by GPTs? I’m sure by now you have heard of those text generators, the AI chatbot known as a Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is the latest addition already infiltrating many curricula and writing communities based on simple algorithms. While I am not a fan of this latest big disrupter because I enjoy writing, there are some legitimate concerns many have posed, such as how will GPT know what words mean without simply making stuff up? Or how will GPT not flood social media with more misinformation? Or, what will the impact be on determining whether a term paper or essay was written by a human or AI-generated? And if the writing assignment is produced by GPT and you submit it as your own, is this considered plagiarism? How will these text generators understand the meaning of words, verify accuracy, or get simple facts wrong? You have to ask how quickly this human-like intelligence will replace writers.

Well, we already invited many aspects of AI to do our thinking for us. Heck, virtual assistant technology has already manifested into performing various tasks that have become shortcuts to our day-to-day operations. Robots are performing functions that keep us from over-exerting ourselves when we say we are too busy to do them, like the iRobot vacuum cleaner or the Robotic Lawn Mower for example.

I don’t know y’all. True artists appreciate the art of creating, painting, or sketching their work. Sculptors appreciate getting their hands saturated in wet clay and molding their tailormade ceramics creatively. True photographers appreciate capturing an image through the lens of their cameras with an authentic eye. Writers, well you know, even despite writer’s block, we still enjoy observing, and documenting our thoughts, emotions, and divine interventions.

Many who entrust this technology said that we (humans) have to learn to work with GPT so that we will not become obsolete. Really? Are humans becoming obsolete? Somehow, I feel like I am living in the movie “Colossus: The Forbin Project,” or The “Matrix,” or “I, Robot.” Just how far will this AI compromise go? Lord, help us!

  1. And the world as we know it was not created to last forever. A new heaven and a new earth will be created when this old earth passes away. That’s my reassurance I guess and what keeps me from going crazy with worry about what’s happening in the world. Bless you Kim. 🥰💖

  2. I’m right there with you, dear Kym…Lord, help us! I’ll apologize in advance for sharing a link with you in my comments, here – a practice I generally discourage on my site (of course, we site owners can always edit). Anyway, it relates directly to your observations. Entitled “Chat GPT and AI Will Take Over”, I was shocked to learn how easily “AI” can out perform experts in a given field. Scary, indeed. Link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-hB-4fnqtM Have a nice day my friend! 🌺

  3. I don’t mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but yes, the use of robotics to replace humans has been an ongoing project for companies in technology and other fields for at least a decade. They will replace all of us if they can, not just writers and artists. Robots don’t get sick. They don’t whine and complain. They don’t demand higher wages and benefits. They don’t take vacations. They can be repaired and easily replaced. In most companies, labor is the highest cost. Replacing humans with robots reduces labor costs and increases profits. I even heard rumors of nurses being replaced with robots when I was still working. It’s insane. Is advanced technology making the world more inhumane and insensitive? You bet.

  4. This is horrifying to me. I was talking to a friend who makes her living by her wonderful writing. She is already have some trouble getting hired because of the devaluing of writers. She believes AI will take over her career within 1 year. UGH!

  5. I’ve heard of this…. however, my feelings are: you can’t replace experience or, love or human encounters with God , so eventually- when will we wake up – robots aren’t everything, ( i guess i’m unbothered ) Poetry, writing , prayer – humanity -unreplaceable 💜💜💜💜💜💜🎶🎶🎶🎶😊✨🤘🏾

  6. Very important topic but I think that it is darn right impossible to replace that human passion that we have when we write. I know they will continue too try to make it more human like. uggghhhh!

  7. The answer for teachers is to ask their students to record their answers or essays… if the recording is substantially different from how the student speaks… then it may be a robot answer. Another alternative would be to Zoom examine each student… ask them to give an answer orally.

  8. Oh yes, I agree Anneta, worrying only makes you go crazier than you already are. Thanks so much for your wise insight. We are aware of the things of this world, we just do our best to avoid letting the world get the best of us. Peace and blessings Anneta! 😍🙏🏼🤗💖🤩

  9. OMG Phil, thank you so much for sharing this very scary video with me. I had to watch this again, because not only is his findings alarming, I am surprised by some of the comments I read, especially the one where the writer says as a result of putting her manuscript in GPT and then it spit out her new and improved manuscript since she apparently had writer’s block, she now brags that she is a published author! I am at a loss for words. You’re right, Lord, help us! Thanks so much my dear friend. Stay encouraged. Hugs and smooches! 😍💖🤗💋🥰✨😘🍯🌟

  11. Oh my gosh Dawn, a few years ago I got wind of substituting doctors and nurses with robotics. Out-freaking-rageous! I thought, no way would this happen, until I remembered thinking about getting lasik surgery in the 90s. When they told me that a robot would dominate the surgery (allegedly with better precision than the opthomologist), and I have no need to worry, I said nope. I will stick with my contact lens and glasses, thank you very much. And honey I am with you about the conspiracy theory angle in this situation, because its all about who can make the bigger mouse trap and get paid bigger bucks. SMH 😠

It is freaking insane! In 2009 I wrote an article “Blinding ‘Me’ With Science” (https://bit.ly/3JfcLnw) because my job was affected by automation, and advanced technology was alarming to me back then, only 13 years ago. I saw the fast-track to technology take over and this scared the crap out of me back then.

It’s funny that you mention nurses being replaced because I saw an episode of some show my husband was watching last week where the actors were discussing the use of some robot with some name I can’t remember right now, telling doctors what to do in the ER. Girl, I am done! This has been creeping in our lives for decades now, but so many people weren’t paying attention. You are right about insensitivity. BIG difference between service from people and service from robots. It’s a money saver for employers, but a disaster for humanity. I don’t see a balance here, but then again, that’s me. Thanks so much for chiming in my friend. 🥰💖🤗

  12. Kathryn, I don’t know what to say. I saw this hitting my industry hard about 13 years ago, and I wrote an article about it. So, sadly the writing industry isn’t the only one affected by this robotic invasion. The rich keeps getter richer and the rest of us…well, that remains to be seen. SMH 😫

  13. I adore your sense of peace Krissy, and I concur. 🙏🏼 Man has a way of screwing things up, and it’s all about the mighty dollar (as the O’Jay’s sang). The bigger mousetrap is only trapping more mice…the ‘blind’ ones! Keep your head up and your eyes focused. In my case, I keep my contact lens clean, along with my eyeglasses! LOL 😁😎😍 Hugs and smooches!

  14. Oh yes Michele, interesting indeed. But if we run on fear, we will never accomplish anything. The human touch is irreplaceable and you can try to fake compassion and empathy, but sorry, it won’t work. I continue to have hope, because that’s who we are and who we were created to be. So here’s to being and remaining human my Dancing Queen! 💃🏻🎶💃🏽 By the way, have you seen a robot dance? Not a good sight! LOL 🤣🤖😂

  15. You hit the nail on the head Belladonna! 🔨😲🔨 Would you believe that they are trying to create a female robot that will respond to sexual stimuli? Girl, have these folks lost their freaking minds? Yeah, they have! Anywho, humans vs. robots…big difference! In those 6 days that God created the earth, I didn’t read anything about a robot! 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Just sayin’!

  16. Interesting angle Ned. I just wonder how much more teachers would be paid if they tried to do something that made ethical sense! But who is going to monitor those SMARTphones??? 😲 Geez! Always a roadblock somewhere. Yet, it seems like we humans are getting….oh how should I put this…a little dumber because of our dependency on artificial intelligence? UGH!!! Wake up people!!! 😫

  17. Rosaliene, I agree. Somehow, we have gotten a little lacksidaisical with simple thinking and doing, by relying too heavily on artificial intelligence. Perhaps, this will be a wake-up call and a kick in the butt to those who entrust their lives totally on high-tech. There is a way to fight back, we just gotta stand up and fight! Thanks for chiming in my friend. 😊💖🤗

  18. Oh my sweet Elvira, thank you for your kind comment. Honey, yes ma’am…people need people! The good thing about technology is that I can connect to my dear friends like you. But a robot cannot feel 🧊🧊🧊 or 🔥🔥🔥 now can it??? LOL 😂😜🤣 You know what I mean!

You too have a relaxing evening my sweet friend. Abrazote mi amiga!!! 🥰💖😘💋😍☕🤗

  21. You and me Kym. And all the other creatives. We’ll be the Dark Alumni, outlawed by the robots and living in underground societies where creatives practice their craft. Our work is much sought after by the rich and uber-rich of humanity – partly because they believe in us and partly because owning a piece of human creativity is the new “in” thing. We don’t get to enjoy our successes as much as we’d like because we live in fear of the repercussions of the rebel lives we lead. But you cannot stop someone who has creativity in their veins.

Idk my dearie but it’s fun fri-Yay so I can’t worry my little head and I’m behind (Even on you?! how did that happen) so I gotta go get with things. xo 💗

  25. Lord help us! This AI is not supposed to be happening. Not where words are concerned. This invasion is not welcomed. (No, invasions are never welcomed but this one— someone let it in. Who? Stop it)!!!!!
I feel for us humans already. It’s pathetic to let that be part of what writing can do.
And the damn things are so smart. Well read. But no heart.
Secretly, I felt this already got a good grip on Medium. And my heart aches. What in decency is AI doing in our midst. Life will seize to be spontaneous when words are mechanically generated. I fear for our future.
Thanks for bringing this topic to the forefront. Bless you have a lovely weekend, Kym. Blessing you.

  26. I feel ya Selma. I wrote about this a little over a decade ago about how invasive artificial intelligence was playing in content marketing back then. I didn’t think that although the buzz was so strong going on around the technology and marketing industry, that it would be this invasive. I can’t imagine not using my faculties to create. Lord help us is right! SMH 😣😲😥
