Oh For Goodness Sake, Stop Clutching Your Pearls Just Because I Wear White After Labor Day! πŸ˜²

So who died and left ‘who’ in charge of making it a law that you should not wear white after Labor Day? Now, I previously worked in various departments of Beauty and Fashion for over four decades. When I asked several sources from buyers to models to fashion magazine writers, why it wasn’t okay to wear white after Labor Day, there was no rule authorizing why you could not. So what is this fuss all about? Hmmmm….

It really came down to more of an antiquated societal adaption of color, since most people wore white and light colors during the summer to stay cool. During the fall and winter months, people tended to shift to darker colors believed to help them stay warm. Pretty much, this was strategic marketing. And by golly, it worked! Personally, I think it boils down to the weight, design, and type of fabric your apparel is made of, regardless of color, whether you feel cool or warm.

Ever since high school when I made a lot of my clothes on my mother’s trusty Singer sewing machine, I always walked to the beat of a different sewing needle, with different fabrics, patterns, designs, and colors. I always mixed things up and still do, by constantly defying the law ofΒ  “proper fashion” according to someone’s crazy genius rules. Call me a fashion maverick if you want. If you’re familiar with the model and fashion designer Iris Apfel, I’m her alter ego.Β

So last week, I went to a doctor’s appointment, boldly and unapologetically wearing my milk-white outfit just to get a gratifying gasp from some proper southern belle! Now perhaps I was waiting for someone to say something so I could give them my talk to the hand, cause the face ain’t hearin’ it attitude. Or perhaps it was me simply being me. Or maybe it’s because I am too doggone old to care. Or perhaps it was a combination of all of those reasons. But guess what, the earth didn’t end, I didn’t get struck by lightning, and the dead did not rise from their graves.

Yeah, I knew I stood out like an Easter Egg on Christmas morning. So, don’t clutch your pearls when you see me wearing white after Labor Day because you might choke yourself. Heck, no one even bothered to make the rule about when to start wearing white again. Yet, if you feel uncomfortable defying a marketing rule that has been circulating for decades now, then don’t wear it. But frankly speaking Scarlet, I don’t give an elephant’s hind parts what others think. I willingly and boldly challenge the fashion police, should they dare try to give me a citation for what they consider a conditional-thinking fashion faux pas, while I’m driving under the influence of wearing milk-white after Labor Day!Β

  1. Oh, my Chickie! I’m so impressed you could make your own clothes.

My mom always said that rule to me, for the reasons you listed. She said, “Don’t wear white after Labor Day, and your shoes should always match your purse.” LOLOL

  2. Girl, Miz Kym, I almost shot iced green tea out my nose after reading this. If you really want to be a fashion outlier, wear your bow tie and seersucker pants suit out too, with your sensible sandals and socks. I sometimes wear white if the weather is warm, especially if I travel to southern California where white pants seems like a year round staple. I applaud anyone that can sew since the only sewing skill I mastered in the 8th grade was ripping seams apart so I could resew them. I dropped off my husband at the Pentagon one morning. We saw a young female sailor in striped bikini panties under her size 7 white uniform pants that were straining over her size 9 behind (The one bad side of wearing white pants.)

  3. Oh….Iris Apfel! Yes! Let’s break all the supposed rules. You go, Kym! I love it. And the fact that you can sew? Do your thing. Wear what you love…especially if it’s your own creation. Me? I love white pants year-round, but I also recognize the risk factors because I invariably pick up splotches of this and that. Thanks for a post that made me smile, smile, smile! πŸ₯°

  4. Coming from the tropics where it’s summer all year around, I found the rule of not wearing white after Labor Day meaningless. Sorry, Fashion Police! Fine me if you must. Our 90-degree heat wave calls for using my white dress.

  5. First, you need to remember that I have not a stylish bone in my body. With that being said, I just wanted to ask, have the style czars taken Global Warming into account. September now is warmer than August. I’m not wearing black in September, just saying. Ha, ha.

  8. Oh my goodness KymberNoodle you are so sweet and your mom is so funny. Those words have been echoed for years and don’t get me wrong, I conformed to those rules until I started asking questions why. But I’m a rulebreaker at times and when my mother taught us how to sew,🧡 honey I really broke the rules back then! πŸ€£πŸ˜πŸ˜‚ What can I say? 😜 Have a relaxing evening my ladybug! 🐞 Thanks for your sweet comment my friend. 😘

  9. Love your spunk and style, fabulous fashionista! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ€ I also enjoyed learning a bit more about you, sewing your own styles and stirring things up with the southern belles. 😁 Fashion rules and expectations are more relaxed in the Wild West, especially when temps are (still) over 100. 🀠 Lovely photos in your fun post. Happy Monday Kymmy! πŸ€—

  10. Now Miz Pat, whenever you start to read my posts, I want to caution you to avoid eating anything that can get lodged in your windpipe or drinking any beverages that can come out of your nose like a fire breathing dragon! 🀣🐲😝

But guuurrrrlllll…no not the striped bikini panties under the white pants. Now honey chile, THAT is truly a fashion or should I say a uniform faux pas! What a sight! 😲 But although I didn’t take Home Economics in school, I had a mother who taught me and my sister how to sew, and crochet. There were many days I had to undo my stitches too. My mother was just that fastidious! I just didn’t like the cooking part because she NEVER had a measured recipe…only by taste! UGH! 😝

  11. Girl Mary, I’m so glad you enjoyed this crazy post. Oh the things we go through honey. If I didn’t work in the industry I would go bonkers with the “so called” rules. 😣 Some make sense, and some don’t. So personally, I merely go with the flow and it works! LOL πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ€£ Hugs and smooches my dear. 😘

What’s up with that? πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜£ But I am so happy that this post brought a smile to your face my friend. May you enjoy the rest of your FANtabulous week! 🌞 Cheers! πŸ₯‚

  15. Now you want me! Loved the Stop clutching your pearls statement. Hadn’t thought of that Southern expression in decades. Brought back memories of back in the day…

Cooking to taste is a double edged sword since different people prefer different tastes. Too hot, too cold, just right.

  17. Thanks so much Michelina! You are so loveable my Dancing Queen. Yep my friend, I think all of this stuff that I do is why I have so much stuff to get rid of these days! Geez! πŸ™„ Leave it to my mother who taught my sister and I something useful that I can actually do. πŸ‘— Of course I go for simple designs with lots of accessories! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜†πŸ€£ I appreciate you my dear and have a FANtabulous week! 19. Yes girlfriend, a pinch of this, that, and the other! But, that was something they were used to. There were few TV dinners back in the day and no microwaves. πŸ˜† So they had to cook every day and perfect it. I can’t imagine such day-to-day torture! 🍰🍽πŸ₯£ But they were a regular June Cleaver in the kitchen! πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸ³πŸœπŸ‘¨πŸ½β€πŸ³
