#BanBookBans: Authors Will Not Be Silenced Nor Silent!

You know y’all, it simply bites my butt that we have to be discussing book bans and it didn’t just start either. In February 2010 I wrote a post, 12 Credible Reasons to Avoid Banning Dictionaries From Schools and Libraries. I had no idea how banning dictionaries from libraries would metastasize into the book bans we see today. In May 2023, I was furious when I wrote this post,Β Book Bans, What Are These Attacks ReallyΒ About? Last year, I also wrote about how books of poetry have been affected by these crazy bans, but I will share that again tomorrow. #BanBookBans

This week my friend Pat, from e-Quips Blog wrote some interesting articles about the freedom to read, the cost of book-banning campaigns, and book sanctuaries which simply blew me away at the depth banning has risen to. Pat is a retired librarian, but not a retired spokesperson for the freedom of reading whatever the hell you want to read. This reignited my fire and encouraged me to pick up my sword again and go all “Zorro” on these banners to keep our voices from being enslaved or extinct by their chains of ignorance. #BanBookBans

So for today, I decided on behalf of book and literacy advocates everywhere, here’s a sarcastic “acrostic” poem just for those pesky book banners. Initially, the first word of my poem was “Fallacious” but after sleeping on it I changed it. I intentionally did not give this poem a title because it will speak for itself, which may raise a few eyebrows.

Sanctimonious
Understanding of
Cognitive creativity and communication
Knowledge deficiency in

Your
Obtrusiveness to
Undercut
Reading capabilities with

Belligerent
Observations laced with ignorance
Oblivious to a
Kaleidoscope of

Brains, brawn, and beauty
Announcing your denouncing of diversity among
Novelists, poets, and authors alike, who know your
Sinister efforts will self-implode through your self-inflicted wounds.

In conclusion for this moment, yes I am perturbed to the highest level by these despicable book bans, but let’s be clear, we will not run away, roll over, and play dead. We will let our voices of outrage resonate boldly and loudly, not with hatred but with the fighting spirit to ban illiteracy and book-banning idiocracy! The more they ban, the more we fight to reverse these outrageous, unethical, and lawless regulations.Β #BanBookBans

  1. Dang, Sistah Kym. When you take up a Call to Arms, you don’t go mealymouthed do you? Thanks for the poem and the shout-out. Love your poem! Don’t get blown or washed away when Helene comes a-callin’ up the Appalachians.

  2. If children and teens are involved, I don’t want pornographic or obscene books in our school libraries anymore than I want those books in the children’s section of the local bookstore. Parents have a right to be outraged and protect their children. I don’t care what adults read or do, but leave our children alone. The pornography/obscenity laws need to be enforced, as determined by the U.S. Supreme Court. That might make me sound puritanical and prudish, but our society is not doing enough to protect our children. I do not tolerate abuse/exploitation of children and teens. I took care of too many teens who were abused, exploited, and neglected by adults.

  3. I was shocked to read that they were actually considering banning dictionaries from schools and libraries back in 2010 (you’ve certainly been on WordPress a long time, Kym).

Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 seems to be getting closer to reality every passing day.

Where there will be not only book bans but book burnings as well.

And it will be illegal to own or possess books.

The only source of information will be a government censored 🀬 and controlled Internet πŸ›œ which the likes of Google, Facebook and YouTube will go along with.

  4. A timely post, Kym! Censoring speech, censoring books, it’s all of a kind! If we don’t fight to keep our freedoms, they will be taken away. Thankfully, I live in a county that doesn’t ban books from libraries, even though they don’t carry self-published books like yours that frankly need to be there too. (Don’t worry: I got a copy for myself and am thoroughly enjoying it.) Voices like yours make a difference but we all need to rise up against book bans. Are they gonna be burning (w)itches at the stake next?!!

  5. It’s outrageous that so many books are being banned in the US. There are a few local complaints that come up here from time to time here, but it’s in schools and often from a single, conservative community.

  6. πŸ€£πŸ˜œπŸ˜‚ Oh my sistah Pat, you aroused the bear in me and I could sit still. I got all fired up again, thanks so you and your spot on research. Thanks girl.

Well, Helene is playing with us in the Piedmont area. It was a scary situation in the mountains last night, especially when a twister was spotted up there. But it seemed to pass over them, thank God. Anywho, I’m Miz Zorro against those band of banning thieves! πŸ€ΊπŸ±β€πŸ‘€πŸ€Ί

  7. Sadje, I appreciate it. I was watching something about it on TV last week and was going to post something this week anyway. But ole Pat got me fired up sooner! Just when people need to read more, these morons come up with what they think is a morally brilliant idea to reduce access to reading books! SMH πŸ˜£πŸ˜ πŸ™„ Where do these folks sprout up from? UGH!

  8. Thanks so much Maggie. πŸ™πŸΌ I guess I was a wee bit perturbed about this ongoing banning campaign that is intensifying, and I just don’t understand how they are getting away with it! Unbelievable! πŸ˜²πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜£

  9. I appreciate that Mary. You know girl, you’re right. We cannot allow our voices to go dark. Things are too critical in these days and times. We refuse to roll over and die. We have to go back to using our common sense and it’s up to us to lead the pack. Are ya ready lioness??? 🐱🐈🦁 Hugs, smooches, and some strong fangs and claws! 😜

  10. I get you Dawn, and honey after volunteering with many young people dealing with abusive conditions they were facing in their home life, it broke my heart about how horrifying their situations were. But I don’t remember growing up with such books in our libraries (of course that was eons ago) or in our kids section in the public libraries we visited in our community with adult-rated material. Now I agree with you that our kids need to be protected, and I agree that parents need to be proactive as much as possible to make sure that our kids are not vulnerable to the ills of society.

Right now, I seem to feel, and this is just my opinion from what I researched, that our high tech sophistication and unregulated laws/guides online have superseded our kid’s reading capacity. Now, there are some books that I believe kids should not have access to. I agree with you. But books aren’t the sole things creating the atmosphere that opens our kids and teens up to abuses, exploitation. There are many moving parts. But while laws may be passed, I agree that they need to be enforced. I can be old-fashioned myself as I see things, because of how I was raised. But we are in some strange times. I would prefer to see great efforts like these book bans applied to those areas where predators are getting to our kids, whether from family members, adults in church, or our kids sneaking from school or cutting hooky from school as we used to call it, with their friends who are more exposed to these types of exploitations and unsavory habits. Thanks so much for sharing some important points Dawn! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’–πŸ˜˜

  11. Christopher, it is such a scary scenario with your words of enlightenment my friend. 😣 Now, while I think parents need to be involved with their children’s school and speak with administrators and librarians about the content of books they house, which is something my parents didn’t have to do, this book ban campaign is a little extreme to me. Heck, trying to get kids to “read” a book is like pulling teeth these days. You know, I’ve seen a few movies that give the scenario that you mention about the illegal possession of books. I can’t think of them right now, but “The Book of Eli” starring Denzel Washington references such illiteracy.

In many parts of our world, kids don’t have access to books. Books are like acquiring diamonds if they get them. Yep, I saw recently where Fahrenheit 451 is close to the chopping block. Such a shame. Let’s hope the nightmare of government censorship won’t take hold in our free countries! We can’t take such a notion for granted. And yep, there were words added to the dictionary that some parents didn’t like and when I read about the dictionary being under consideration, I thought that was crazy. Fast forward to now, things are looking even crazier my friend. πŸ˜¬πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜² Thanks for chiming in!

  12. WOW Maggie, that’s unreal! We can’t get our kids to get off of their mobile devices to read. They have social media accounts that they can somehow bypass parental restrictions that worry me more than many of the books they have banned. Unbelievable! Thanks for your wise words! πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸΌπŸ’–

  14. Well said Kym. I don’t understand this new tendency and we ought as authors and readers to stand firm and fight for what we believe is needed today and for the generations to come.

Wishing you a great day and thank you for standing up for books!!

  17. I appreciate you Maggie. I believe for the most part, writers and authors put their blood, sweat, and tears into their work. To try to silence us, is like driving a stake through the heart of Count Dracula in his coffin and that is not okay! Thanks for your comforting words my friend. πŸ˜£πŸ’–πŸ€—πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜¬ Cheers!

I internalize things too much, including horror movies! 😲 The news lately feels like something from “Tales From the Crypt” or “The Twilight Zone!” 😝 My blood boils too girlfriend. UGH!
