As we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick today, I would like to write about the fashion colors of choice. We all know that green is the well-known color to wear on St. Patrick’s Day, but did you know that orange is also another specific shade for St. Patrick’s Day? Irish Catholics were considered “Green” and Irish Protestants were considered “Orange.” Southern Ireland’s theme color is green, but northern Ireland’s theme color is orange.
The color green, which is the color of clover and nature is associated with Ireland, the Irish, and St. Patrick’s Day. The original color for St. Patrick’s Day was blue, although orange and gold were also specific shades before green became the official color worn in the U.S.
This cultural and religious celebration held annually on March 17, is the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock (a three-leaved plant) to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. It is customary to wear shamrocks, green clothing or accessories on St. Patrick’s Day.
