From the Pages of a Good Read: The Fashion of Paper Dolls

I don’t know if playing with paper dolls is as popular nowadays as it once was when I was growing up, but I remember how interesting it was to design my own paper clothes to add to my paper doll’s wardrobe. These hot paper fashions are a creative upcycling marvel of design splendor. Talk about novel patience from a good read!

Architect Arthur Huang is Making Treasures Out of Trash ♻

I am always searching for recycling inspiration, especially when repurposing un-used things around my home. Now, mind you, I am not a pack rat, but I have always had this way of looking at something that is set aside to be thrown out and find a way to find a new, useful or decorative purpose for it.

I came across this story about Arthur Huang, a Taiwanese architect, engineer and the co-founder and CEO of Miniwiz. His company takes different types of waste and transforms them into over 1,200 materials that can be used for construction, interiors, and consumer products. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and affected shipments of conventional materials, Huang found an alternative.

He turned his attention to solving the urgent need for medical supplies and hospital space. The Modular Adaptable Convertible (MAC) ward — the world’s first hospital ward built out of recycled materials, according to Miniwiz, was designed by the company in partnership with the Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital in Taipei, and expect to admit patients as early as this month. According to Huang, a portable version can be built from scratch in 24 hours, allowing it to be transported to places with high medical needs.

Sustainable fashion is a part of the growing design philosophy and movement towards environmental and social sustainability. The goal is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility.

Typically many people think about purchasing clothes from second-hand stores like consignment shops, Goodwill stores, or yard sales. Upcycling is reinventing fashion for environmentally sustainable clothes and accessories. Frankly, when you think about it, this concept is not especially new if you grew up in the fashion era of “hand-me-downs.”

Richard Malone, Mara Hoffman, Eileen Fisher, Elliss Solomon, Stella McCartney, and Samantha McCoach are just a few of those designers making sustainable eco-friendly fashions climb the popularity charts. So before you toss out those outdated clothes that are too far gone to donate, try recycling those items to recreate something unique and fabulous to complement your own style.

Happy Eco-Friendly #FashionForwardFriday!
