Most commonly served with salsa, chile con queso, guacamole, cheese dips or other dips, tortilla chips are a popular snack or hors d’oeuvres consumed for practically any occasion. Today, we celebrate this crunchy food item on National Tortilla Chip Day.

Tortilla chips have always been considered as a Mexican food, known as tostados. They were first mass-produced in Los Angeles during the late 1940′s and it is reported that they were made popular by Rebecca Webb Carranza as a way to use the misshapen tortillas that were rejected from the automated tortilla manufacturing machine, used in her and her husband’s factory. Carranza received the Golden Tortilla Award in 1994 for her contribution to the Mexican food industry.

If you’re looking for a festive recipe to make and serve for dinner, why not try this Tortilla Chip Casserole we found on Myrecipes.com. It only takes 1 hour to make and serves 6.
