Reblog: β€œEarth Crisis” – Poem by African American Poet Kym GordonΒ Moore (from the archives of Rosaliene Bacchus)

You know my friends, when you are bestowed the honor of having your work highlighted in a very special way, you relish in the essence of sheer humility and pure joy. We celebrated Earth Day this week and so many of us shared our passion and commitment to be the caretakers of Mother Earth (the only planet we have) and not squander our resources by allowing her to continue to fall victim to negligence. So it is with great pleasure that I share a heartwarming review from author Rosaliene Bacchus (Three Worlds One Vision~ Guyana – Brazil – USA) in her Poetry Corner April 2024.

Thank you a million times over Rosaliene for including me in this feature. After reading your beautifully orchestrated words, I had to question, is that really me? You should have been a publicist, my dear friend. Be sure to check out Rosaliene’s site and immerse yourself in worldwide storytelling communications that touch the pulse of who we are in this world we inhabit together. But seriously, I am verklempt by this honor and how the poetry of Rosaliene’s words brought me to joyful tears. I am truly grateful.

β€œEarth Crisis” – Poem by African American Poet Kym GordonΒ Moore

My Poetry Corner April 2024Β features the poem β€œEarth Crisis” from the poetry collectionΒ We Are Poetry: Lessons I Didn’t Learn in a TextbookΒ (USA, 2022) by Kym Gordon Moore, an African American poet and marketing communications professional. The following excerpts of poems are all sourced from this collection.

Moore earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Marketing. Born and raised in South Carolina, she now lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.

With over four decades as a writer and public speaker in marketing communications, Moore has become an advocate of using poetry in the fight against illiteracy and aliteracy among children and adults. She also mentors young and aspiring poets by identifying commonalities in their personal stories while exposing them to diverse opportunities that transform their experiences into creative development.

Moore’s latest book is not your regular collection of poetry. As noted on the back cover: β€œThis book contains several components that serve as an academic complement giving creative insight into the poetry revolutionary movement. It functions as a dialogue engineer, designed to build and employ the application of poetry in the fight against illiteracy, functional illiteracy, aliteracy, and disparity.”

In the nine-stanza title poem, β€œWe Are Poetry,” the poet draws attention to our shared human experiences and lessons learned that we bring to poetry. The excerpt below includes the first and seventh stanzas (p. 237):

We are children of the universe not an invisible species
caretakers of creation, freedom seekers, and justice makers
bridge builders not wall squads, converging on the path of love
compassion emerging from our hearts like a phoenix rising

[…]

we are poetry, an opulent rainbow of luminous tribes
melding in an earthly crockpot of multifaceted cultures
mighty voices standing up for the marginalized and oppressed
dousing the firestorm of hatred and infected sores of bigotry

The final three-stanza poem in the collection, β€œLet There Be Peace,” is a call forΒ a peaceΒ that surpasses all understandingΒ (p. 277):

We echo, let there be peace on earth
we pray for an end to conflict and wars
emotionally charged anger and bitterness
like a ferocious animal where bloodshed roars

The featured nine-stanza poem, β€œEarth Crisis,” is my selection for Earth Day 2024 celebrated on Monday, April 22nd. Manifestations of our planetary crisis, covered in the poem, are stark:Β environmental degradation, intense storms, climate change, deforestation, rising sea levels, melting polar ice caps, floods, scorching wildfires,Β andΒ industrial waste.Β Yet, we continue to go about our lives as though all is well. We’ve got this. Technology will make all things right again, we tell ourselves.Β

A Warm Message from the Governor of North Carolina Regarding My Book of Poetry πŸ™πŸΌ

What a way to celebrate National Poetry Month! OMG, I received this lovely letter from the Governor of our state, Governor Roy Cooper. His letter warmed my heart and humbled my spirit as he thanked me for sharing a copy of my book, “We Are Poetry: Lessons I Didn’t Learn in a Textbook” with him. He said he looked forward to having the opportunity to read it.Β

My humbleness comes because with such a busy schedule he has to lead the state of North Carolina, just to take the time to sign and send this letter (although I know he has a staff taking care of these things) his acknowledgment alone fills my heart with unspeakable joy! Trust me, I am grateful. If and when he gets the chance to read it, I’d be honored, but my humble heart is already overflowing with gratitude. Thank you, Governor Cooper! πŸ™πŸΌ

I am deeply honored to be in good company with Lauren Scott, author of “Ever So Gently” as we were featured on our friend Brian’s site, Writing from the Heart with Brian. Many of us have struggled with the sentiments that Brian’s satiric message expresses of his love/hate relationship with poetry. Thank you Brian for your bold admission and poetry vulnerability that we all have faced in some way.

The college course I mentioned in my book made me want to burn my book of poetry for that class in a huge bonfire because any interest I probably could have had to love poetry was certainly not happening. It was like scratching your nails across a blackboard. This was also felt by those in my class. It wasn’t just about memorizing a poem, but regardless of how famous some poets may have been I simply was not connecting, period. It felt like being tied up and forced to go on a hunger strike of verses.

I feel ya Brian. Hang in there my friend. Fortunately, after reexamining why my mother loved writing and reciting poetry so eloquently, I began looking at it differently. I am so glad I did. It was because of her that I felt a poetic connection to the rhythm of poetry.

This WP platform is one of many where I’ve met so many wonderful writers and poets who craft inspiring words of verses and stanzas, and where a community of poetry encouragers dwell. Thank all of you for taking the time to not only write your adoring reviews of my book along with so many others on WordPress, Amazon, and Goodreads but for also being so supportive of our word art!

Please click on the link below to read Brian’s post in its entirety if you haven’t already read it. Thanks again Brian for the shoutout! And thank all of you, who have taken the time to not only read our work but who have gone the extra mile to write a review that we so humbly appreciate!

POETRY, PASTRIES, & PIES PODCAST: My POEMS Method in TheraPoetry

Today, I am featuring the second part of my motivation behind creating my POEMS method in TheraPoetry. I addressed this topic in one chapter of my book “We Are Poetry: Lessons That I Didn’t Learn in a Textbook,” but was asked by a few audience members to talk a little bit about it on my podcast. Thank you to those individuals for your support and encouragement. I am truly grateful and I appreciate all of you.

Before I continue, let me once again share with you my disclaimer, as I have done before. These methods are not substitutes for a professional diagnosis or medical treatment. I am not a medical or mental health professional, nor do I play one on television. With that said, I want to introduce you to what is included in this podcast.

The acronym POEMS was designed to pay homage to my mom because she was a poet. Healing can be difficult at times because it takes “time.” All too often we are driven to want instantaneous results, so we can hurry up, feel better, and move on. With certain things you probably can, but with real-life scenarios in general, your patience is tested. Trust me on that.

So please enjoy this episode about “My POEMS Method in TheraPoetry.” ClickΒ hereΒ to follow, visit and engage with any of the Poetry, Pastries, & Pies shows.

POETRY, PASTRIES, & PIES PODCAST: How TheraPoetry Helped Me to Heal

I was asked to address the motivation behind my chapter, TheraPoetry: The Healing Voice of Poems from my book, β€œWe Are Poetry: Lessons I Didn’t Learn in a Textbook.” As noted in my book, I’m sharing this disclaimer that what I discuss here today is not by any means a substitute for a professional diagnosis or medical treatment. I am not a medical or mental health professional, nor do I pretend to be. This is a process that worked for me at the time I needed help navigating through my grief.

TheraPoetry, a term I coined in 2003 after the death of my mother gave me a voice when I couldn’t verbally express my pain from such an unexpected loss. I guess you could say poetry became my coping mechanism, a balm, and a lifesaver as I suffered my loss in silence. Perhaps this evolved from the influence of my mother who was also a poet.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is lessons-i-didnt-learn-in-a-textbook.jpgTheraPoetry does not mean it is a cure. There is a difference between therapy and a cure, although some people use the terms interchangeably. Creating this method helped to guide me through the grieving process.Β The POEMS method I devised in TheraPoetry didn’t give me instant gratification, but it became a process that allowed me to gradually release the pressure of the intensity caused by the hurt and pain I was facing. Today on my podcast, I am discussing why I created this method of coping with my challenges. In the next part of addressing this topic, I will go through each step to explain how my healing method began through the art and application of poetry.

Poetic Reflections of Light

The first image of illumination
when I take off the blinders and see through darkness
a glimmer of guiding light still shines
giving me hope where the lost is now found

a bird is singing its song
I can only hear the direction from where it comes
although I don’t see it, it still sings
for its presence is known by its voice

standing in a dark room at night
the reflection of a full moon pierces its way
through gaps in windows from the depths of the sky
a natural spotlight still lights the night

on a stormy day that suddenly breaks
when the sun penetrates through dark clouds
and casts rays beaming from the heavens
the sun always shines in all of its splendor

alluring are the reflections that glisten
light revealing the evolution of life
not merely existing by mortal standards
but breathing through the expanse of spiritual guidance!

Let your light so shine
Let your light rain down on others.
